Thumbs Up Diner

Jessica | May 2, 2009

By popular demand, we decided to visit Thumbs Up Diner for a brunch-time meal Friday.  Thumbs Up is another breakfast-centric eatery located right near where I live.  Unlike other places I’ve passed and never tried, somehow I’ve never even noticed this unassuming building on Marietta St.  Their menu has both breakfast and lunch items with breakfast served all day, but lunch only after 11am.

I decided to try the Yukon Omelette (Smoked salmon, fresh spinach, and cream cheese) with a biscuit, and Mario had 2 pancakes, a scrambled egg, and bacon.

Aside from my apparent lack of makeup, you can see that I was pleasantly surprised by my first bite of omelette. The cream cheese inside was super creamy and had almost a tangy taste. So good! I didn’t think the salmon was anything special (although Thumbs Up makes a point of noting that it is smoked in-house), but there was plenty in the omelette so that you could both see and taste it. Mario’s pancakes were “banging”, but he thought the eggs and bacon weren’t cooked quite enough (eggs were slightly runny, bacon not as crisp as he likes).

Like West Egg Cafe, Thumbs Up Diner is open until the early afternoon, but with it’s location, I also think they could make a killing by being open late night. I can’t say which breakfast restaurant I like better at this point–I’ll have to go back and find more menu items to compare!

Thumbs Up Diner also has locations in Decatur, East Point, and on Edgewood & Boulevard in Downtown Atlanta.
