I think she was expecting something similar to the shrimp & grits she had at Drago’s once, which had kind of a fried grits cake as opposed to the creamy style JCT has.

I’m surprised your mom didn’t like the egg in the shrimp & grits – I thought that really set the dish apart and added an extra rich taste. The meyer lemon doughnuts are my favorite dessert. I still need to get there on a Sunday for supper. Glad your family enjoyed it!
