Jamaica Mon!

Jessica | May 9, 2009

I’m fresh off my trip to Jamaica, slightly sunburned, but wishing I was still lying out on the beach.  Because I did a lot of “touristy” things while I was there, I wasn’t able to try as much local cuisine as I would have liked.  So, this post will talk about a few things I did try, and a few I should have tried based on advice from tour guides and other locals.  First off, Jamaica’s national dish, ackee and saltfish (photo courtesy of flickr user galif548).

Short Hiatus

Jessica | May 3, 2009

The blog will experience a week-long hiatus as I take my post-graduation trip to JAMAICA!! I do have a few posts waiting to be completed, so if I get some time poolside I may finish and post them.  No promises though!  I’m sure the island will provide me with many fantastic potential posts as well, so check back next week!!

Also, after my return, blog posts will be coming to you from my hometown of Baton Rouge, LA, where I’m spending the summer (my last real break before grad school!). So stay tuned for some reviews from the culinary capital of [my] world, South Louisiana!

Thumbs Up Diner

Jessica | May 2, 2009

By popular demand, we decided to visit Thumbs Up Diner for a brunch-time meal Friday.  Thumbs Up is another breakfast-centric eatery located right near where I live.  Unlike other places I’ve passed and never tried, somehow I’ve never even noticed this unassuming building on Marietta St.  Their menu has both breakfast and lunch items with breakfast served all day, but lunch only after 11am.

I decided to try the Yukon Omelette (Smoked salmon, fresh spinach, and cream cheese) with a biscuit, and Mario had 2 pancakes, a scrambled egg, and bacon.
