    Holeman+Finch Public House

    Jessica | September 30, 2009

Another “finally!” culinary experience this weekend was trying the oft-discussed Holeman+Finch Public House burger. H+F offers only 24 burgers a night at 10pm on a first-come, first-served, no reservations basis. The burger is only even listed on the menu for Sunday brunch, when they make ~70, and is also when Mario and I decided to stop in and try it out.

    Star Provisions

    Jessica | September 27, 2009

I have been wanting to visit Star Provisions for the longest and finally made it over Friday afternoon with my friend Tracie. Star Provisions is a culinary shop with deli and cheese counters, a bakery, and an eclectic gift/cookware shop. But we were visiting to check out “Provisions to Go”, which serves up a fantastic array of gourmet dishes and my favorite, sandwiches, to eat-in or take-out. Arguably their most talked-about sandwich is the shrimp po’boy, but I was ridiculously excited to see that on my visit, their sandwich special for the day was an oyster po’boy:

    New South Kitchen & Bar

    Jessica | September 24, 2009

I spent last weekend in Charlotte and got to do some shopping, participated in a 5K heart walk, and visited New South Kitchen & Bar. I basically decided on this place based on some online buzz and a promising-looking menu, and I was expecting it to maybe be Charlotte’s version of JCT Kitchen. That it was not, but I wasn’t disappointed.

Mario ordered the Crispy Chicken Sandwich (honey mustard, grilled apples, cheddar cheese) and I had the Shrimp and Grits (housemade sausage, mushrooms, white cheddar grits).

    Chocolate Pink Cafe

    Jessica | September 22, 2009

As a quick follow-up to my Vickery’s dinner post, here’s a little blurb on a little cupcake I had from Chocolate Pink Cafe for dessert.

    Mochaccino Cupcake

    Mochaccino Cupcake

The Mochaccino cupcake (vanilla chiffon cake, coffee cream filling, chocolate ganache, coffee buttercream) was moist and flavorful. I especially loved the coffee buttercream on top (but frosting is always my favorite). I also love cupcake fillings and was really looking forward to biting into the coffee cream filling, but I was disappointed because I didn’t get much flavor out of it. I think the buttercream may have overwhelmed it.

Zifty delivered my cupcake as well, but I hear Chocolate Pink has a really fabulous space that can be enjoyed cafe-style or rented out for events.

    Vickery’s Bar and Grill

    Jessica | September 21, 2009

Since it has been monsooning in Atlanta for the past week or so, I’ve not been feeling motivated to do any extensive eating out or grocery shopping. Enter Zifty. Zifty is a delivery service in Atlanta that has everything from movies to take-out to cigarettes available to be delivered to your door. While the only thing I’ve utilized Zifty for is the occasional dinner when I’m feeling lazy, I think it’s a great service that more restaurants should participate in. After perusing the menu options, I decided to try a place I’ve never visited, Vickery’s Bar and Grill.

This is a little different from my usual posts since I can’t comment on the restaurant environment or service, but I do know that the steak and mushroom salad I had (All natural grilled sirloin over mixed greens with bleu cheese crumbles, sauteed mushrooms and fried onions) was delicious!

    Homemade – Lasagna Rolls

    Jessica | September 16, 2009

I was in the mood for heavy Italian recently (but then again, when am I not?) and decided to make up some lasagna rolls again. I found a recipe from the only skinny cook I’ve ever seen, Giada De Laurentiis, via foodnetwork.com.

Unlike my previous batch, these are not vegetarian, they have yummy prosciutto mixed in to the filling.

    Lunch Ideas

    Jessica | September 13, 2009

Searching for low-cost lunch options has led me to the conclusion that most of my grad student lunches will consist of sandwiches.  Luckily, this cool site, Scanwiches, is providing me with some really great ideas.  Check them out…but maybe wait until after lunch.

Homemade – Lobster Mac and Cheese

    Jessica | September 6, 2009

I like to watch the Food Network while I’m on the treadmill so I can fantazise about all the delicious things I’m going to eat when I’m skinny.  But when I saw Ina Garten cooking up this lobster mac and cheese, I decided waiting to be skinny wasn’t going to cut it and had a casserole dish made within a week’s time.

    The Social House

    Jessica | September 1, 2009

Since Mario is in town, breakfast is always a must, so we tried yet another Howell Mill Rd. breakfast spot after church on a rainy Sunday.  The Social House serves breakfast and brunch 7 days a week, and like most other breakfast-centric eateries in Atlanta, had a line out the door.   The restaurant’s website advertises Georgia-grown food served in a “bright, cheerful” environment.   Aside from the room’s brightness by virtue of its many windows, “cheerful” is not what came to mind when I was met with a harried-looking waitstaff and an unfriendly host.
