Brother’s Food Mart

Jessica | March 16, 2010

This is a belated note on a food find from my Mardi Gras trip. I wasn’t going to post on these at all, but after prodding from my brother and another blogger, I’ve decided to grace you all with these meat pies from Brother’s Food Mart:

Brothers' Meat Pies

Brothers' Meat Pies

These were bought from a gas station (though Brother’s has a French Quarter location that is just a food mart) and consumed at 2am, so I think I was justifiably hesitant to try these. But my brother insisted I couldn’t NOT eat one, and so there I was, holding a grease-stained bag and warm dough pocket filled with mystery meat.

They. Were. DELICIOUS. The meat pies consisted of a spicy (almost nose-running spicy) filling encased in a flaky but still substantial crust. I’ve since done some research on just what, exactly, is in a meat pie, and where they come from in the first place:

Antico Pizza Napoletana

Jessica | November 9, 2009

I’m finally jumping on the Antico Pizza Napoletana bandwagon, though at this point it probably wouldn’t matter what I say since the ATL blogger community has already fallen head-over-heels for the place. With that said, 1) the pizza is as good as everyone says, and 2) I hope to approach this post from a slightly different angle–customer service. I’ve been the recipient of some bad restaurant service lately, and Antico is unfortunately on that list, but they did work quickly to rectify the situation.

Antico is located in the Home Park neighborhood near Georgia Tech. They have recently expanded their hours to include lunch and close “when the dough runs out” (my guess is somewhere around 9pm). Initially intended to be take-out only, they have also recently added a community dine-in table to allow customers to enjoy their pies on the spot. I think this was change was mainly blogger-fueled, since ATLiens are getting to be very picky about their crusts with the onset of the “ATL Pizza Wars” (Google that for some interesting commentary) and it tends to get soggy when carried home. I visited one Saturday evening to take my pizza to go since I live nearby and hoped it wouldn’t be soggy by the time I got home. I ordered the Capricciosa (mushroom, artichoke, prosciutto cotto, bufala) and a cannoli:

And now for my customer service angle:

Vickery’s Bar and Grill

Jessica | September 21, 2009

Since it has been monsooning in Atlanta for the past week or so, I’ve not been feeling motivated to do any extensive eating out or grocery shopping. Enter Zifty. Zifty is a delivery service in Atlanta that has everything from movies to take-out to cigarettes available to be delivered to your door. While the only thing I’ve utilized Zifty for is the occasional dinner when I’m feeling lazy, I think it’s a great service that more restaurants should participate in. After perusing the menu options, I decided to try a place I’ve never visited, Vickery’s Bar and Grill.

This is a little different from my usual posts since I can’t comment on the restaurant environment or service, but I do know that the steak and mushroom salad I had (All natural grilled sirloin over mixed greens with bleu cheese crumbles, sauteed mushrooms and fried onions) was delicious!
